When were solar panels invented?
The development of solar panel technology was formed with the contribution from various scientists around the globe. In 1873, Willoughby Smith discovered that selenium had photoconductive potential (able to conduct electricity when exposed to sunlight.) Years later in 1883, Charles Fritts produced the first solar cells made from selenium wafers.[/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”18048″ animation=”none”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row kswr_row_top_decor_enabled=”false” kswr_row_bottom_decor_enabled=”false”][vc_column]
Eureka! Silicon!
After several decades a more robust photoconductive material was identified. Solar cells as we know them today are made from silicon, not selenium. Daryl Chapin, Calvin Fuller, and Gerald Pearson’s created the first silicon PV cells at Bell Labs in 1954. The first ever silicon solar cell could convert sunlight at 4% percent efficiency, compared to an average of 17% for modern PV systems.[/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”18049″ animation=”none”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row kswr_row_top_decor_enabled=”false” kswr_row_bottom_decor_enabled=”false”][vc_column]
To Infinity & Beyond!
Following the invention of the silicon solar panel in 1954, solar panels were utilized in space exploration and currently power many satellites.
